PRINZ Response to Government Announcement on planned Public Sector cuts

The Public Relations Institute of New Zealand (PRINZ) acknowledges the ongoing changes across the public and private sectors, and the impact these have on people, organisations, and communities, particularly in Wellington.

Recent data highlights a significant shift in employment, alongside continued discussion about the future shape and size of the public service. For communications professionals, these changes have been – and continue to be – felt both directly through role reductions, and indirectly through wider economic impacts.

At times like this, advocacy matters.

Public relations professionals spend much of their time advocating for others, helping organisations communicate clearly, build trust, and engage with the communities they serve. PRINZ’s role is also to advocate for the profession itself: supporting and actively promoting the need for – and extensive value of – ethical and quality strategic communication in Aotearoa New Zealand.

In a complex and fast-moving information environment, clear, transparent and responsible communication is critical. It is the much-needed antidote to the mass of false news and ‘opinion’ that increasingly clouds our awareness. It helps organisations navigate change, supports people through uncertainty, and contributes to informed public discussion.

PRINZ remains committed to supporting the communications profession, advocating for its value, promoting high standards of practice, and fostering a strong, connected community during a period of ongoing change.

We encourage thoughtful, evidence-based discussion about the future of work, and the important role communications and communications professionals play in supporting resilient organisations and communities.
