Robert Walters: Update
Wellington continues to be a robust and resilient recruitment market across Permanent, Fixed Term and Contract in 2023, and in both the Public and Private sectors.
The April-June months saw hiring activity return to levels experienced throughout 2021 and 2022, with May’s budget providing functional and programme managers with much needed clarity for the year ahead. The expected Election Year slowdown in policy-related Communications & Engagement work has been offset by demand from a renewed emphasis on strategic transformation and organisational change initiatives.
While we’ve seen a slightly more employer-friendly market in the first half of 2023 and some cooling in salaries and hourly rates, we continue to observe a battleground for top Communications, Engagement, Content and Media talent across Permanent, Fixed Term and Contract – with candidates still attracting multiple offers and able to command better-than-ever remuneration, benefits and flexibility.
The Auckland job market continues to display remarkable resilience and adaptability in the face of ongoing global and local challenges. Despite some turnover within the junior market as candidates embark on overseas adventures, the private sector remains robust. While the rising cost of living has impacted motivation for job changes, salary and benefits remain powerful incentives for junior professionals, while senior-level candidates prioritize stability and flexible work arrangements.
Looking ahead, there is growing speculation about the potential for economic uncertainty, causing businesses to increasingly turn to contractors as a risk-mitigation strategy. In particular, the communications space is witnessing a surge in highly skilled career contractors who are instrumental in helping businesses effectively convey their messages both internally and externally. Furthermore, with an upcoming election on the horizon, market unrest is anticipated, further fuelling the demand for contractors. In summary, the Auckland job market is adept at navigating challenges and providing an ever-evolving landscape that caters to the needs of both job seekers and employers.
