He is a media consultant\, commentator and researcher with more than five decades of experience in news media. He holds a doctorate in political studies. A former editor-in-chief of the New Zealand Herald\, he lectured on media and communications at the University of Auckland for a decade. He was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2015 for services to journalism and is the recipient of the Commonwealth Astor Award for Press Freedom. \nHe is the author of three books including Trust Ownership and the Future of News (an international study of media ownership models)\, and numerous research papers including a series on the Christchurch mosque attacks. She recently left Stuff as a national reporter\, where she covered breaking news\, entertainment\, lifestyle and more. In July she will be starting a new role at the Spinoff\, covering business\, politics and culture. \n \nKaranama Ruru\, Te Ao Māori Reporter\, Stuff\nKaranama Ruru is a 23 year old journalist who is currently a te ao Māori reporter for Stuff. His work has appeared in local and national publications around the country\, and has been presented as evidence in legal cases (for example the Waitangi Tribunal smokefree inquiry). Karanama has a particular interest on how national decisions impact localised Māori whānau. \n \nSherry Zhang (she/they)\, Freelance Writer\nSherry is a second-generation Chinese New Zealand writer and editor who works in journalism\, poetry\, creative nonfiction\, and theatre. She was the editor at The Pantograph Punch\, has interned in newsrooms like The Spinoff and Bloomberg News\, and is currently a freelance writer. \n \nZoe Madden-Smith\, Multimedia Journalist\, Re: News\nZoe Madden-Smith is a multimedia journalist at Re: News based in Tāmaki Makaurau. Zoe joined Re: News in 2019 as a writer but has since found a love for video storytelling. As a 26-year-old\, she has a passion for telling stories that centre and resonate with young people and has a special interest in stories around health\, sex and anything taboo. DESCRIPTION:25th July 2024 @ 11:30am – 1pm\n					\nOverview\nYou are invited to join Waikato PRINZ and Waikato-Tainui for an informative and engaging koorero on Maaori-led news and storytelling\, featuring speakers from Waikato Tainui’s award-winning newsroom\, Aukaha News. \nAukaha News recently won the Taho Ao Pāpāho Media Award for their excellent news and storytelling\, which covers a wide range of topics. It is proudly by-Maaori-for-Maaori media\, which aims to give voice to the unheard and unseen. \nHow are they leading the way in their mahi nationally\, and what insights can be applied to our communications and storytelling? \nOur speakers are Kereama Wright (Executive Producer\, Aukaha News) and Jason Ake (GM of Communications and Engagement\, Waikato-Tainui) who will share the story behind Aukaha News\, including why it started and how it is different to other newsrooms. They’ll also share some favourite stories\, and discuss the importance of indigenous and local stories\, including te reo Maaori and Te Tiriti. \nKereama and Jason will discuss the impact of AI on news in Aotearoa\, recent changes in the media landscape and what the future looks like from their perspective. They’ll also talk about how Aukaha News has invested in rangatahi (youth)\, how we can all do that in our mahi\, and why we should. \nAt the conclusion of the event\, we’ll announce the 2024 Waikato PRINZ Matariki Scholarship recipient\, a young rangatahi Maaori who has been chosen by Waikato-Tainui and Waikato PRINZ. \n\nThat person will receive a one-year free PRINZ membership\, a bespoke mentoring programme developed to reflect their interests and aspirations and are invited to join the Waikato PRINZ committee for a year. \nAt the conclusion of their one-year of mentoring\, they will help lead and organise the 2026 Waikato PRINZ/Waikato-Tainui Matariki event.\n\nEvent location: Kākāriki House\, The Wise Group’s Hamilton office\, 293 Grey Street in Hamilton East.
