He is a media consultant\, commentator and researcher with more than five decades of experience in news media. He holds a doctorate in political studies. A former editor-in-chief of the New Zealand Herald\, he lectured on media and communications at the University of Auckland for a decade. He was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2015 for services to journalism and is the recipient of the Commonwealth Astor Award for Press Freedom. \nHe is the author of three books including Trust Ownership and the Future of News (an international study of media ownership models)\, and numerous research papers including a series on the Christchurch mosque attacks. His most recent research project for Koi Tū has been a media policy position paper that examined ways in which journalism can be sustained in New Zealand. \nHis Tuesday Commentary on media matters appears weekly on his website www.knightlyviews.com. \n																										 \nMark Jennings \nMark is co-editor and co-founder of Newsroom.co.nz\, and former head of news and current affairs at 3 News for two decades. \n																										 \nTim Murphy \nTim is co-editor and co-founder of Newsroom.co.nz\, and former editor-in-chief and editor of the New Zealand Herald for 14 years. \n																										 \nAlan McDonald  \nAlan is the Head of Advocacy\, Strategy and Finance at the EMA. Her contributions to the public relations profession include her eight-year tenure as board member and Secretary of the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management and she is an active member of the International Advisory Board for FERPI. \nBeyond her education and consultancy work\, Catherine is a respected writer and speaker on the societal impacts of public relations. Her career has spanned the Northern and Southern Hemispheres\, and she is a recipient of the Public Relations Institute of New Zealand President’s Award for exemplary contribution to the profession.

DESCRIPTION:13 February 2024 @ 4.30pm – 6.00pm\nOverview\nNIWA’s comms team outlines their PRINZ Supreme Award winning campaign. \nNIWA’s use of communications to tell the scientific story of the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai volcanic eruption in 2022 won its communications team the Supreme Award at the PRINZ Awards 2023.  At the Awards last May\, head judges said the NIWA campaign was well-researched\, conceived and executed within a very short timeframe and while managing multiple agencies.  The campaign also won the Best Use of Media Relations award. \nNIWA communications manager\, Sarah Fraser\, and members of her team will walk us through this unprecedented communications challenge.  The Tonga volcanic eruption in January 2022 was one of the world’s most unparalleled natural events. An internationally funded team of New Zealand scientists set sail to discover its mysteries\, and they needed an explosive communications strategy to match. \nAttendees will hear about how the NIWA communications team worked across different disciplines\, cultures\, and time zones to pull off a 12-month-long science story that was interesting\, informative\, and imperative – one that reverberated around the globe\, much like the shockwaves from the volcano.
