Before moving to New Zealand in 1996\, Deborah was a partner in Makwetla & Associates\, one of South Africa’s first affirmative-action communications consultancies. She worked on landmark nation-shaping campaigns including the Sowetan Nation Building Programme and Soul City\, an internationally recognised “edutainment” initiative that used mass storytelling to shift public health outcomes at scale. In New Zealand\, Deborah founded the PR arm of Bates Advertising before launching her own agency from her kitchen table in 2000. That business became Pead\, now one of the country’s most respected\, partner-led communications agencies\, known for shaping\, protecting\, and rebuilding reputations for some of New Zealand’s most visible brands and institutions. Her work spans major cultural moments and category-defining launches\, including New Zealand Fashion Week\, the revival of the New Zealand Music Awards\, the launch of Xbox and My Food Bag\, and award-winning campaigns that cemented Pead’s reputation for fearless\, effective storytelling. In 2025\, Pead won the PRINZ Supreme Award for HAKA\, uniting a nation and bringing a world record home. Alongside her agency work\, Deborah co-runs Danbri Farm\, a regenerative Northland property producing premium Angus beef harvested humanely on-farm.
