He’s been deputy editor for the NZ Listener\, founding producer of TVNZ’s Q+A and Executive Producer at TV3’s The Vote and The Nation. He has written for the Guardian and the Washington Post\, founded Pundit.co.nz and led RNZ’s move into podcasting in 2016. He is currently Executive Editor\, Audio at RNZ\, leading a team of 15 and working with a range of external producers. \nRNZ podcasts – such as Gone Fishing\, The Service\, Our Changing World and Nellie’s Baby – frequently top the podcast charts in New Zealand\, have won more than 90 awards in competitions worldwide and had more than 40 million listens in the past year. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 29th July 2025 @ 9.30am – 12.45pm (1 x morning session)\nOverview\nLearn how to get across your message – and to make it stand out from the hundreds of other pitches that editors and journalists see daily. \nLively and enjoyable\, this course is suited for everyone: from those new to the industry to those who’d like a refresher (highly experienced practitioners usually get just as much out of it). \nBy the end of the training\, you’ll know all about: \n\nthe most common mistakes people make when pitching – and how to avoid them\nthe different kinds of stories editors look for\nchoosing the right angle for a release – and how to connect your key message to that\ncrafting an intro for a press release that will grab an editor’s attention\nwhat to put in – and leave out – of a media release\nhow to structure\, write and format a press release\nwriting compelling email subject lines and headlines\nhow – and when – to follow up an email\nwhat images\, contact details and other key information editors need\ncalling editors and journalists.\n\nThe course is highly practical and interactive\, with participants able to ask questions throughout. \nZoom links will go out closer to the date.  \nMeet the facilitator\nDan Kaufman is a former Sydney Morning Herald editor and journalist with over 30 years of experience. \nAfter working on a variety of different magazines in the 90s\, he then joined the SMH\, where he wrote for and edited almost every feature section at one time or another\, from Travel to Health and Science. \nHe also launched Sydney Bar Zine\, which he ran for half a decade\, and taught journalism and media writing at UTS and The University of Sydney. \nHe’s now the director of Media Survival (https://mediasurvival.com/)\, which runs media training\, writing\, sub-editing\, and communications skills courses. From recent graduates to experienced leaders\, our speakers will reflect on their career paths\, the skills that matter\, and how they stay grounded in kaupapa Maaori while navigating a fast-changing industry. This is a space to celebrate Maaori success\, storytelling\, and mahi — and to explore how te ao Maaori and the world of comms can come together to create meaningful impact. Whether you’re a student\, just starting out\, or already working in the sector\, you’ll leave with insights\, inspiration\, and connections to help guide your next steps. Now in its fifth year\, this kaupapa is a proud partnership between PRINZ and Waikato-Tainui\, showcasing the power of collaboration and the importance of supporting rangatahi into the industry. This year’s event has been organised by Terah McCarthy\, the 2024 PRINZ Waikato Matariki Scholarship recipient and a third-year Bachelor of Communication student at the University of Waikato. Terah will also MC the evening\, and hopes that students will come away feeling more confident about making the leap from study to mahi. Please ensure you leave enough time to park and walk to the Waikato Management School for the event.  \nYour panellists are:\nNgatupara Ritai (Ngaati Mutunga\, Te Atiawa\, Taranaki Iwi\, Ngaaruahine\, Ngaati Hauaa) studied at the University of Waikato majoring in Strategic Management and minoring in Te Reo Maaori and Digital Business. He now works as a Digital Coordinator at the Hamilton City Council where he helps tell council stories across a range of digital platforms. Ngatupara appreciates the precise nature of digital communications\, which goes hand in hand with his keen eye for detail. \n																										 \n \nXanthe Wainui-Mackle (Ngāti Porou\, Ngāi Tūhoe\, Ngā Ariki Kaipūtahi and Te Arawa) is a University of Waikato Bachelor of Communication graduate\, majoring in Public Relations and Marketing. She now works as an Account Executive at King St Advertising in Hamilton. Xanthe enjoys the fast pace nature of agency life and is passionate about meaningful communication building\, that makes an impact for customers and stakeholders.  \n													\n		Donna-Lee Biddle (Ngāti Pikiao\, Whakatōhea\, Ngāti Maniapoto) holds a Master of Arts in Communication from Wintec\, where she explored the role of media in reporting Maaori stories and developed a cultural guideline for media and tertiary institutions. She spent nearly a decade as a journalist\, primarily at Stuff\, covering crime\, justice\, and social issues\, and working on long-form investigations. Donna-Lee now works as an investigator at Te Kāhui Tātari Tūre | Criminal Cases Review Commission\, where her communications skills support complex and meaningful mahi investigating potential miscarriages of justice. She is passionate about mentoring the next generation of Maaori journalists and comms professionals.  \n																										 \nMaioha Panapa (Ngāi Tāmanuhiri\, Rongowhakaata\, Te Whānau a Apanui\, Waikato-Maniapoto) is a reporter for Aukaha News and a proud graduate of the University of Waikato\, where she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Maaori and Indigenous Studies and Anthropology in 2017. A former Te Rito journalism cadet with NZME and Whakaata Māori (Māori Television)\, Maioha has also worked as a communications advisor for Waikato-Tainui. She brings a strong background in journalism\, broadcasting\, and communications\, with a passion for telling stories that uplift Maaori voices and perspectives. \n																										 \nJustin McIntyre (Ngāi Tūhoe\, Ngāti Awa) graduated from the University of Waikato in 2006 with a Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS)\, majoring in Human Resource Management\, Marketing\, and International Management. Justin currently works as the People & Culture Business Partner at Waikato-Tainui\, where he partners with a dedicated team to support kaimahi in delivering initiatives that empower and uplift Waikato-Tainui tribal members. Justin’s korero will cover how when applying for mahi\, preparation is everything. She serves as Chair of the ECREA Risk and Crisis Communication Section\, Editor-in-Chief of Corporate Reputation Review\, and Editorial Board Member of Public Relations Review and Business Horizons. She is the Principal Investigator and Coordinator of the Horizon Europe project CUES (EUR 6.5 million\, 2024-2028)\, a Management Committee Member of the COST Action project Alert Hub (EUR 500\,000\, 2024-2028)\, and a member of the Crisis Communication Think Tank (CCTT). He’s been deputy editor of the NZ Listener\, founding producer of TVNZ’s Q+A and Executive Producer at TV3’s The Vote and The Nation. He has written for the Guardian and the Washington Post\, founded Pundit.co.nz and led RNZ’s move into podcasting in 2016. He is currently Executive Editor\, Audio at RNZ\, leading RNZ’s digital audio strategy\, overseeing a team of 15 and working with a range of external producers. \n \nDom Harvey\, PodLab \nDom left his hugely successful career in radio in 2021 to become a professional podcaster. The Dom Harvey Podcast is one of New Zealand’s most listened to podcasts receiving around 30 000 downloads each week. In November 2024 Dom’s podcast won Podcast of the Year at the NZ Podcast Awards and Gold for Best Entertainment Podcast & Best Independent Podcast. He won Silver for Best Interview Podcast. Drawing on recent ethnographic research within New Zealand’s consulting industry\, Dr Deepti Bhargava and Dr Petra Theunissen (Auckland University of Technology) explore how public relations consultants use empathy\, politeness\, humour\, and tactful communication to balance professional expertise with relational harmony when offering critical advice. She teaches across several courses\, including the student-led PR consultancy Outside the Square\, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Her research explores diversity\, equity and inclusion (DEI)\, digital communication\, artificial intelligence (AI)\, work-integrated learning (WIL)\, and the skills and relational dynamics that underpin effective public relations practice\, particularly client–consultant relationships and strategic communication planning and evaluation. Deepti is an Accredited Member and Fellow of the Public Relations Institute of New Zealand (PRINZ)\, where she recently served as Chief Examiner for its Accreditation Programme (2021–2023) and has contributed to several committees.
