Four years on\, this recognisable campaign is still driving behaviour change and positively impacting New Zealanders. \nAt this breakfast session\, hear from the social marketing experts behind the ‘Have a hmmm’ public engagement programme\, which aims to connect New Zealanders to interventions that support their wellbeing and protect them from injury. \nResearch shows almost all injuries are predictable and therefore preventable. Based on that understanding and built on behaviour change principles\, ‘Have a hmmm’ encourages people to stop and think about how getting injured could impact their family\, friends\, and workmates. \nSince launching in 2021\, the campaign has led to continuous year-on-year increases in the number of New Zealanders who say advertising and other activations have motivated them to take steps to prevent injuries to themselves or others. \nHelen Mills and James Whitaker will share their insights on developing an evidence-based approach to changing attitudes and behaviour\, how they’ve maintained support amidst tight budgets and changing priorities\, and what they’re doing to ensure ‘Have a Hmmm’ continues to have an impact over time. He’s been deputy editor for the NZ Listener\, founding producer of TVNZ’s Q+A and Executive Producer at TV3’s The Vote and The Nation. From recent graduates to experienced leaders\, our speakers will reflect on their career paths\, the skills that matter\, and how they stay grounded in kaupapa Maaori while navigating a fast-changing industry. This is a space to celebrate Maaori success\, storytelling\, and mahi — and to explore how te ao Maaori and the world of comms can come together to create meaningful impact. Whether you’re a student\, just starting out\, or already working in the sector\, you’ll leave with insights\, inspiration\, and connections to help guide your next steps. Now in its fifth year\, this kaupapa is a proud partnership between PRINZ and Waikato-Tainui\, showcasing the power of collaboration and the importance of supporting rangatahi into the industry. This year’s event has been organised by Terah McCarthy\, the 2024 PRINZ Waikato Matariki Scholarship recipient and a third-year Bachelor of Communication student at the University of Waikato. He now works as a Digital Coordinator at the Hamilton City Council where he helps tell council stories across a range of digital platforms. Ngatupara appreciates the precise nature of digital communications\, which goes hand in hand with his keen eye for detail. \n																										 \n \nXanthe Wainui-Mackle (Ngāti Porou\, Ngāi Tūhoe\, Ngā Ariki Kaipūtahi and Te Arawa) is a University of Waikato Bachelor of Communication graduate\, majoring in Public Relations and Marketing. She now works as an Account Executive at King St Advertising in Hamilton. Xanthe enjoys the fast pace nature of agency life and is passionate about meaningful communication building\, that makes an impact for customers and stakeholders.  \n													\n		Donna-Lee Biddle (Ngāti Pikiao\, Whakatōhea\, Ngāti Maniapoto) holds a Master of Arts in Communication from Wintec\, where she explored the role of media in reporting Maaori stories and developed a cultural guideline for media and tertiary institutions. She spent nearly a decade as a journalist\, primarily at Stuff\, covering crime\, justice\, and social issues\, and working on long-form investigations. Donna-Lee now works as an investigator at Te Kāhui Tātari Tūre | Criminal Cases Review Commission\, where her communications skills support complex and meaningful mahi investigating potential miscarriages of justice. She is passionate about mentoring the next generation of Maaori journalists and comms professionals.  \n																										 \nMaioha Panapa (Ngāi Tāmanuhiri\, Rongowhakaata\, Te Whānau a Apanui\, Waikato-Maniapoto) is a reporter for Aukaha News and a proud graduate of the University of Waikato\, where she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Maaori and Indigenous Studies and Anthropology in 2017. A former Te Rito journalism cadet with NZME and Whakaata Māori (Māori Television)\, Maioha has also worked as a communications advisor for Waikato-Tainui. She brings a strong background in journalism\, broadcasting\, and communications\, with a passion for telling stories that uplift Maaori voices and perspectives. \n																										 \nJustin McIntyre (Ngāi Tūhoe\, Ngāti Awa) graduated from the University of Waikato in 2006 with a Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS)\, majoring in Human Resource Management\, Marketing\, and International Management. She is Associate Professor in the Department of Media and Communication at Erasmus University Rotterdam. She serves as Chair of the ECREA Risk and Crisis Communication Section\, Editor-in-Chief of Corporate Reputation Review\, and Editorial Board Member of Public Relations Review and Business Horizons. She is the Principal Investigator and Coordinator of the Horizon Europe project CUES (EUR 6.5 million\, 2024-2028)\, a Management Committee Member of the COST Action project Alert Hub (EUR 500\,000\, 2024-2028)\, and a member of the Crisis Communication Think Tank (CCTT). Yijing obtained her PhD degree in Corporate Reputation and Stakeholder Management from Rotterdam School of Management (RSM)\, Erasmus University Rotterdam\, ranked among the top 1% of business schools worldwide. She is the author of international publications in leading field journals such as the Journal of Business Ethics\, Journal of International Management\, Business Horizons\, Convergence\, Public Relations Review\, Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management\, Journal of Communication Management\, International Journal of Communication\, and Media and Communication. \n \nJulien Leys\, Director\, Pendulum Strategies\nJulien has over 24 years’ communications experience working in both the private and public sectors. \nFollowing completion of a First-Class Master’s Degree in Law\, Julien was appointed as the legal and political adviser to the Minister of Local Government in New Zealand’s first MMP Parliament. \nAfter senior positions with leading communications agencies\, Julien established an award-winning consultancy PR Partners which he ran for 10 years. In 2014 PR Partners was merged with Trans-Tasman consultancy SenateSHJ where Julien was the General Manager\, Board Member and a senior Partner until March 2019. Julien left to establish Pendulum Strategies as a strategic corporate communications consultancy with a client list covering energy\, transport\, government affairs\, financial services\, horticulture\, technology\, education and healthcare sectors in New Zealand\, Australia and the Pacific Islands. \nJulien is a specialist in crisis and issues management\, media relations\, and government relations. He has extensive experience in assisting major clients with complex issues as well as successfully managing crises across the energy\, pharmaceutical\, transport\, public utility\, labour hire\, technology and food / hospitality sectors. \nHe also has extensive experience working with the building and construction sector and was appointed as the Chief Executive of the Building Industry Federation in 2019. \nJulien is a Fellow of the Public Relations Institute of New Zealand\, and a Past Chair of the College of Fellows. He also regularly presents as part of the APR course. \n \nDee Crooks\, General Manager\, ProCare\nDee Crooks is an award-winning marketing and communications professional with more than 20 years’ experience across diverse sectors\, including health\, property\, finance\, insurance\, professional services\, and retail. \nHer expertise spans a wide range of disciplines\, including external and internal communications\, advocacy\, sustainability\, brand strategy\, and marketing. Dee’s core specialisation and passion lie in media relations\, reputation management\, and navigating complex issues and crises with strategic precision. \nBefore joining ProCare\, Dee served as Corporate Communications Director at the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) and as Head of Communications & PR at AMP New Zealand. Her career also includes working for major financial services providers in Auckland and London\, as well as contributing her expertise to industry bodies and public relations agencies. \nDee holds a Bachelor of Communications (BCS) from the Auckland University of Technology\, with a major in public relations and event management.
