SUMMARY:Engaging Effectively with Passionate Communities
DESCRIPTION:2nd November 2023\nOverview\nIt is natural to shy away from conflict\, but this is what drives the meaningful conversations that communities are craving. \nJoin Natasha Utting (Media Manager\, Waka Kotahi)\, Jenni Cochrane (Communications Manager\, Matamata-Piako District Council) and Sarah-Lee Crellin (Associate – Communications and Engagement\, Beca) as they share stories and tips on how to use good communication skills to help drive great engagement. \nGain valuable insights about how to work with the media effectively to support community conversations. \nThis is a panel event with an opportunity to get involved\, share your own insights and ask the hard questions. There will be ample time for Q&A at the end too\, moderated by PRINZ fellow\, Peta Goldsworthy. If you have any questions you would like to send through in advance for the panel\, please email them through to PRINZ  office@prinz.org.nz prior to the event. \nYour panellists are:\nNatasha Utting – Media Manager – Waka Kotahi\nNatasha Utting worked as a broadcast journalist for close to 18 years\, mostly as a reporter and producer in television current affairs. Her career has taken her around the world from covert work in Iran\, to prison in the Philippines\, to the Ross Ice shelf in Antarctica. From bus shelters with homeless people\, to interviews with world leaders and pop stars. From undercover in a yoga cult\, to camping with crocodiles in the Kimberleys. In 2020 Natasha took on her first communications role\, telling stories about the construction of Transmission Gully. She’s now a media manager for Waka Kotahi\, NZ Transport Agency\, looking after media enquiries and issues in the Bay of Plenty and Waikato. Natasha lives in Auckland where she is mum to Soren\, 9 and Marigold\, 4. Bedtime stories are a favourite these days. \n \nJenni Cochrane – Communications Manager\, Matamata-Piako District Council\nJenni Cochrane is the Communications Manager at Matamata-Piako District Council where she’s been pushing the boundaries on engagement and digital enablement since ages ago (16 years if we’re counting…). She’s transformed comms at MPDC from a one-man band to the 16-ninja comms\, digital and events squad that she leads today. Jenni’s going to share one of her team’s highlight projects from the last 18 months – Tell Tom. Tell Tom was all about redeveloping a playground that was due for renewal – but instead of a typical asset replacement\, the team decided to have fun with this one! \n \nSarah-Lee Crellin\, Associate – Communications and Engagement Beca\nSarah-Lee has spent a good part of 15 years working somewhere within the communications and engagement industry. Starting her career in Wellington she worked in Parliament\, was a media manager for multiple royal visits and worked alongside the Helen Clark for Secretary General UN campaign. Lately\, she has spent her time growing a team in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty region of excellent communications and engagement professionals for Beca – tackling some of the toughest issues communities are facing right now\, from roading infrastructure through to climate change.

SUMMARY:Language Matters - Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion for PR Professionals
DESCRIPTION:Friday 27th October – Members Only Webinar\nOverview\nWhile the idea of inclusivity through language isn’t a new concept\, the topic of language as a more thoughtful way of speaking for the people around us is\, in the grand scheme of things\, a relatively new conversation.  For this reason\, there are many misconceptions\, and a fear of saying the “wrong thing”. \nPublic Relations professionals hold the power to redefine communications on a structural level in organisations\, and society at large\, and can therefore very constructively support the experiences of people from diverse communities. \nIn this session we will learn about the building blocks of diversity\, equity and inclusion (DEI)\, why it matters in public relations\, and what allyship through language looks like.  We will consider how the words we use can have a positive or negative impact on those around us\, how words can entrench or dismantle inequities and how words can\, ultimately\, build stronger and more authentic connections. \nFollowing ticket purchase we will be forwarding a short pre webinar poll to understand current PR perspectives and attitudes so please check your inbox and spam folder \nYour presenter is..\nMaretha Smit\nMaretha is the Chief Executive of Diversity Works New Zealand\, having taken up this role right in the middle of the first Covid-19 lockdown in 2020. \nShe has a background and qualifications in behavioural and business sciences and has held three transformational Chief Executive roles in South Africa\, prior to her immigration to New Zealand about seven years ago – in the disability sector\, local government and health sector respectively. \nShe has also recently completed a six year term as Trustee of Belong Aotearoa\, a specialist settlement agency that focuses on addressing the barriers to successful integration of newcomers in New Zealand. \nMaretha has a strong commitment to issues of social justice and a deep understanding of the way in which intersectional layers of prejudice have an impact on societal and employment outcomes.

SUMMARY:BusinessDesk on the future of AI in journalism + meet the team
DESCRIPTION:19th July 2023\nOverview\nThere is a lot of interest in the impact that generative AI will have on all sectors\, including communications\, media and content creation. \nBut anyone who’s played around with ChatGPT knows that the content it produces can feel dry\, synthetic\, and\, well\, a bit like a robot wrote it! Its usage is also raising eyebrows around ethics\, copywrite and accuracy. \nBusinessDesk – the home of some of New Zealand’s best business journalism – is two months into a trail making use of AI to near-instantly publish NZX news\, using ChatGPT to write articles from company announcements as they are released. \nThe idea is that it allows its newsroom to concentrate on what we know they’re great at – discovering\, writing and publishing news others do not have. But is it working? How are companies and markets reacting to the initiative so far\, and what lessons can we take from it at this early stage? \nJoin us for this exclusive Q&A event at NZME’s iHeart Radio lounge. BusinessDesk Publisher and General Manager\, Matt Martel will discuss how the country’s journalists and commentators are making the most of this technology. \nAs a senior communications professional\, you understand the importance of staying on top of market trends and breaking news. But what does this mean for the future of quality-assured editorial? And how should it impact your approach? \nYour presenter is..\nMatt Martel spent 10 years in senior positions at Fairfax Media\, including as an executive editor in the company’s senior leadership team at The Sydney Morning Herald\, The Australian Financial Review and The Age (Melbourne). In 2017\, Matt redesigned Stuff’s suite of newspapers\, taking them from broadsheet to compact. He joined BusinessDesk in 2019 and is based in Auckland

SUMMARY:Plain Language Webinar – more than just words
DESCRIPTION:15th June 2023\nOverview\nPlain language is a skill. It’s about so much more than just choosing the right words. Presenting information clearly\, concisely and in an engaging way is an art form. And one not consigned to a particular industry or type of communication. \nFrom websites to annual reports\, insurance documents to technical reports and a whole host of comms products in between there is a recognised need for all communications to be more accessible\, more digestible\, and quite frankly more interesting to read. \nWith the Plain Language Act 2022 coming into force in April writing clearly and concisely is top of mind for many organisations. Across the public service\, we now have dedicated Plain Language Champions. \nSo\, if you’re one of them and want a bit of a boost and some tips on how to bring others along with you then join us to hear from the latest Plain Language Award winners and plain language champion Lynda Harris for this lunchtime webinar hosted by the Central PRINZ Committee. \nPanelists:\nLynda Harris\, Founder and Chief Executive of Write\nLynda is a communications specialist who believes that plain language makes the world a better place. Supported by her like-minded team\, she’s built a company that aims to put clarity and connection at the heart of every business communication. \nLynda believes that clear communication isn’t just a ‘nice-to-have.’ It’s essential to the smooth and successful operation of any organisation. Poor writing wastes time and money\, but it also risks losing the trust of customers. Under Lynda’s leadership\, Write has become the largest plain language consultancy in the world. \n \nPhil Belcher\, Product Manager\, Life & Disability Insurance for the Medical Assurance Society\nPlain Language Champion\nIt was a pleasant surprise for Phil to take out this award after his teammates nominated him for his significant and influential contribution to their plain language initiative. Taking a digital design concept to a traditionally print focused medium he helped turn several lengthy and jargon filled documents into one single one that is easy to navigate\, relatable and readable. \n \nAlice Moloney\, Senior Advisor – Safety and Stability\, Family Violence at the Ministry of Social Development\nPlain Language Website (Public Sector)\nJudges described www.areyouok.org.nz as an excellent example of effective plain language writing and information design. They praised the tone for being reassuring\, caring and helpful\, as well as being clear and non-judgemental. User testing helped to gauge feedback to make improvements and ensure that victim/survivors voices remained at the heart of this kaupapa to make sure the language\, tone and content of the site was right. The team also worked with family violence support providers to make sure information was accessible and relevant for different communities. \n\nKate Thompson\, Head of Communications at thinkstep-anz\nBest Plain Language Annual Report\nBest Plain Language Document — Private Sector\nBest Plain Language Technical Communicator \nKate is Head of Communications at trans-Tasman sustainability firm thinkstep-anz. She leads a team of plain language experts who ‘translate’ the company’s technical sustainability work into plain English executive summaries\, case studies\, and blogs that clients can understand and act on. \nJudges praised the work by thinkstep-anz for their simplicity\, use of plain language\, supportive graphics\, excellent design\, and tone. The conversational style is described as engaging and honest\, bringing a human element to each communication. All of this whilst still coming across as professional subject-matter experts. \nToni Raeleigh\, Product Specialist\, AA Insurance\nPlain Language Champion – Best Organisation \nAA Insurance is proud to champion the use of plain language by simplifying its insurance policies\, so they are easy to read\, understand and act on\, to help earn the trust of their customers. The organisation also says that plain language helps to put the customer at the heart of everything they do. This has been supported by user-testing which shows positive feedback from customers. More importantly\, growing customer numbers year on year demonstrate the business benefits of plain language in inspiring trust and customer loyalty.
