Hear their rules of engagement for dealing with media\, and learn invaluable tips on building great media relationships and for getting your press releases across the line. \nYour presenters are..\nRoy Pilott is the editorial director at Good Local Media\, which independently owns and proudly publishes Cambridge News and Te Awamutu News. Roy has worked in media in both New Zealand and the UK. He began his career at South Waikato News\, worked for a football magazine and an east London tabloid\, and later became the editor of the Waikato Times and Taranaki Daily News\, and sub editor for the Sunday Star Times. Roy left the Daily News in 2015 and began working under the Roy Pilott Public Relations moniker\, primarily doing communications for the Western Institute of Technology\, before returning to the Waikato in 2019 and joining Good Local Media. He also spent a year to September 2022 editing Wānaka Sun. \nMary Anne Gill is a senior writer at Good Local Media and is one of Waikato’s most experienced communications and public relations practitioners. She started her newspaper career working in advertising at the Portsmouth News in the UK\, then later at the Auckland Star and 8 O’Clock newspaper. She later moved into journalism\, working for Whanganui Chronicle\, The Taranaki Daily News\, then owned and operated her own community newspaper called the Ruapehu Press in Taumarunui\, before moving north to the Waikato Times. During her time at the Waikato Times she won several national writing awards including three times at the Qantas Media Awards (now Voyager). In 2007\, she took up a communications leadership role at Waikato District Health Board\, then at Rotorua Lakes Council\, and then spent five years at Life Unlimited Charitable Trust. She returned to community newspaper journalism joining Good Local Media in 2021\, works on contract for Enrich Group\, a charitable trust in Te Awamutu\, and does other writing work.

In February 2022\, Sally’s contribution to the Parks Industry was recognised through receiving the Ian Galloway Memorial Cup from Recreation Aotearoa. Sally has recently moved into a new position\, Group Manager Customer and Community Services at Waipā District Council expanding her skillset to cover the Communication and Engagement and Community Advisor space. In this role she leads the teams that manage the District’s parks and reserves\, cemeteries\, libraries\, museums\, trust management including pools and Maungatautari Ecological Island\, community connection and Communication and Engagement. Sally has a passion for providing spaces and services for the community to enjoy\, and can often be seen out running or cycling along the districts many cycle ways and parks.

DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, 15th November 2022\nOverview\nOkarito Kayaks used the time they had from the COVID-19 downturn to address a thorny problem – a widespread gorse invasion around Ōkārito Lagoon. They put the word out about ‘GorseBusters’\, hoping for a few volunteers. What they got instead was nationwide media coverage\, generous donations of supplies from major businesses\, and 90 volunteers from across the country. \nOkarito Kayaks introduced the idea of GorseBusters to Development West Coast (DWC)\, the regional economic development agency\, for help raising awareness of the project. \nWith no marketing budget\, media relations were leveraged to turn a small-scale working bee into a national event that gave back to the local environment and provided a rare feel-good story during challenging times. \nHear from Aaron Rees from Development West Coast about how the tiny town of 40 were managed to get the help of outsiders to help fight the gorse invasion. \nZoom links will go out closer to the date to allow for those last minute sign ups! In 2014 PR Partners was merged with Trans-Tasman consultancy SenateSHJ where Julien was the General Manager and a senior Partner until March 2019. \nJulien is a specialist in crisis and issues management\, media relations\, and government relations. He has extensive experience in assisting major clients with complex issues as well as successfully managing crises across the pharmaceutical\, transport\, public utility\, labour hire\, technology and food / hospitality sectors. \nHe also has extensive experience working with the building and construction sector and was appointed as the Chief Executive of the Building Industry Federation in 2019.
