Attempting to get our 2800 Auckland employees fully vaccinated during another COVID-19 lockdown was not an easy feat. In response to this challenge\, the SkyCity Internal Communications team executed a thorough plan that used creativity\, empathy\, and the influence of community leaders (including a certain pink-haired microbiologist) to inform and empower our people to roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated. That’s the billion-dollar question the Palmerston North City Council asked their ratepayers over the last year. \nNature Calls is the biggest financial and environmental decision Palmy’s ever made.\nOn the day consultation was due to start\, they were plunged into the country’s first lockdown. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, 15th November 2022\nOverview\nOkarito Kayaks used the time they had from the COVID-19 downturn to address a thorny problem – a widespread gorse invasion around Ōkārito Lagoon. They put the word out about ‘GorseBusters’\, hoping for a few volunteers. What they got instead was nationwide media coverage\, generous donations of supplies from major businesses\, and 90 volunteers from across the country. \nOkarito Kayaks introduced the idea of GorseBusters to Development West Coast (DWC)\, the regional economic development agency\, for help raising awareness of the project. \nWith no marketing budget\, media relations were leveraged to turn a small-scale working bee into a national event that gave back to the local environment and provided a rare feel-good story during challenging times. \nHear from Aaron Rees from Development West Coast about how the tiny town of 40 were managed to get the help of outsiders to help fight the gorse invasion. \nZoom links will go out closer to the date to allow for those last minute sign ups! This is because everyone has their own online platform and it’s hard for clients to distinguish them all from one another. This is where coverage in traditional media and the ability to share that though multiple channels has become so powerful. The third-party endorsement it offers allows those who use it to stand out from the rest. \nAttracting this coverage for clients used to be a major focus of PR Practitioners\, but this has been dwindling over recent years as more and more communication platforms have appeared. While these are all effective\, they don’t come with the credibility and expert status that appearances in traditional media do. \nThis interactive course outlines the steps that PR Practitioners need to take in today’s world to get their clients into traditional media\, whether that be a national television news programme\, a niche magazine or an online news website. (The below tickets are only available to purchase for the 4 confirmed waitlisted attendees and are unfortunately not for purchase outside of that\, thank you for your interest)  \nFollowing the popularity of last year’s collaboration with Waikato-Tainui\, we’re back with a session that will provide insights into taking a kaupapa Maaori approach to your communications and public relations practice. \nOur event is inspired by Matariki\, and the values of reflection\, celebration and inspiration. \n  \nNick Maaka (Te Kāhui Tātari Ture – Criminal Cases Review Commission) returns to facilitate a panel made up of three local waahine working in the communications\, engagement and media space. \nHana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke\, Maioha Panapa and Donna-Lee Biddle will share their insights and experiences as Maaori communicators\, including: \n\na youth/rangatahi Maaori perspective on communications\nan introduction to maramataka  (Maaori lunar calendar) as a guide to communications and engagement\nan organisational approach to tikanga\, te reo and Te Tiriti\nwhat’s behind a new cultural guideline for New Zealand media\n\nThere will be a Q&A session with the panel at the end of their presentations. Tickets to last year’s event sold out – don’t miss this one! \nThanks to Katherine Barry and the Waikato-Tainui comms team for making this event happen.  \nReflect – Donna-Lee Biddle \nDonna-Lee is from Ngāti Pikiao\, Te Whakatōhea\, Ngāti Apakura and Maniapoto. She was raised in Murupara\, a small forestry town in the Bay of Plenty\, and spent her childhood riding horses “borrowed” from the back of the marae\, and swimming in the awa. She has four children and lives in Kirikiriroa with her husband. \nCurrently an investigator at Te Kāhui Tātari Ture – Criminal Cases Review Commission\, an independent Crown entity\, Donna-Lee was previously a journalist for Stuff\, covering large breaking news events such as the Whakaari eruption\, and was involved in and led many long-form investigations. She has won several Voyager Media awards for her work\, particularly in the feature writing and crime and justice sections. \nDonna-Lee is now a part-time columnist with Stuff\, and also studying a Master of Arts at Wintec\, due to be completed in August 2022. Her dissertation will analyse the representation of Maaori in the media and inform a cultural guideline for journalists and editors\, which she hopes will be utilised in newsrooms across the country. \nOn the panel\, Donna-Lee will be speaking about her current role as an investigator and her organisation’s approach to tikanga\, te reo\, and Te Tiriti\, as well as highlighting a few projects she worked on when she was a journalist. She will also speak briefly about her master’s project – why she chose to study that particular topic and what she hopes to achieve by publishing a cultural guideline. \n \nCelebrate – Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke   \nHana-Rāwhiti Maipi-Clarke (Waikato\, Ngā Puhi\, Ngāti Porou\, Te Atiawa\, Ngāi Tahu) knows the positive influence that maatauranga Maaori and maramataka Maaori can bring to the way we live. \nIn 2020\, Hana launched her book Maahina\, created to encourage rangatahi to better understand the environment and how it can help us physically\, mentally and emotionally. She is a passionate advocate for rangatahi mental health and education through maramataka\, and recently featured in an article on The Spinoff about her work using the maramataka and Matariki to help whaanau grow kai on their whenua. \nHana will provide an introduction to the influence of maramataka Maaori on people’s behaviours and attitudes\, and how it can guide the way we engage and communicate with people. \n \nInspire – Maioha Panapa \nMaioha Panapa is of Waikato-Maniapoto\, Ngai Taamanuhiri\, Rongowhakaata and Te Whaanau a Apanui descent. She was raised in the small south-eastern village of Te Muriwai\, 20km outside of Gisborne. \nMaioha spent the majority of her life on the East Coast\, until her family moved to Hamilton in 2012 to begin her secondary school years in a city with more opportunities. After graduating high school at Tai Waananga ki Ruakura\, Maioha began her Bachelor of Arts in Maaori Indigenous Studies and Anthropology at the University of Waikato. \nThe university became a place of endless challenges and possibilities\, a place where Maioha gained new skills that shaped the voice she wished to implement in matters that target tauira and rangatahi Maaori alike. \nGraduating in 2020\, Maioha went to work at Waikato-Tainui in the comms and engagement team\, taking up opportunities that included creating a national\, rangatahi-led COVID-19 social media campaign\, Ngaati Rangatahi. Led by rangatahi\, for rangatahi\, the campaign included creating content that relates to our youth\, whilst also sharing the right information from the right sources. What’s good for rangatahi is good for Aotearoa because that’s you\, that’s me\, that’s us. Pro-Whakapapa\, Pro-Whaanau\, Pro-Rangatahi!

She graduated in 2012 from Auckland University of Technology with a Bachelor of Communication Studies majoring in Creative Industries. She has both private and public sector experience\, working on different projects impacting communities throughout the country. She is currently the Communications Advisor at Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori\, focussed on the revitalisation of te reo Māori and normalising it as a living language. Makere is part of the team that leads campaigns including Te Wiki o te reo Māori and the Māori Language Moment. She coordinated the entry for the latter into the Golden World Awards run by the International Public Relations Association in 2021. It won the prestigious top prize ahead of hundreds of other entrants. Previously\, she’s worked in communications and engagement on transport and infrastructure projects\, including New Zealand’s largest infrastructure project: City Rail Link. As part of her engagement experience\, she established good relationships with Mana Whenua and connected with diverse communities across Aotearoa. \n \nRyan Willoughby\nSenior Communications Advisor at GNS Science\nRyan Willoughby holds a Bachelor of Communication (Public Relations) and is a Senior Communications Advisor at GNS Science. His passion is finding innovative ways to tell stories\, and he was named the PRINZ Young Public Relations Practitioner of the Year in 2021. He says the beauty of communications is that you effectively get to experience many jobs in your lifetime. With work experience in the sports\, health\, science and tourism industries\, his stories include a great white shark who picked up an underwater camera\, Prince Harry photobombing his boss at the Commonwealth Games\, a kākāpō brain surgery and the development of the first COVID-19 test in New Zealand. He has worked on campaigns to help kiwi babies fight infleunza\, and to help reduce inequities in cervical cancer screening. Ryan believes communication is universal\, and there is more to communications than writing – like photography\, design\, oration and video.

The judges were particularly impressed with how they did this over multiple channels.  \nSacha sees plain language as a tool for empowerment. She has a long-term commitment to access to justice issues and is passionate about using plain language to help people understand their rights and responsibilities. Sacha also leads CAB’s Campaign for Inclusion in a Digital Age\, which highlights the need for information and services to be delivered across multiple channels.  \nViolet is the main person who looks after the content on the CAB website and has a knack for saying things plainly. Violet constantly reviews and updates the website to ensure the information is clear\, relevant\, and accurate. This includes managing over 2\,500 plain language questions and answers about people’s rights. \n  \nSuzie Tingley\, Manager Digital Deliver at Te Hiringa Hauora | Health Promotion Agency – As the Lead Digital Communications Advisor Suzie was a key member of the Ministry of Social Development Digital Communications Team which won the Best Plain English Website — Public Sector 2021. Working alongside the MSD Youth Service they engaged with young people to ask them for their views on transforming the Youth Service Ratonga Taiohi website into one that hosted meaningful content in a tone and language that spoke directly to them. \nSuzie is an experienced channels manager having worked across multiple public sector agencies in a variety of roles. She’s passionate about increasing diversity\, equity and inclusion online through partnering with users and stakeholders in product design and development to deliver better outcomes. \n												\n																										 \nDr Ian Civil\, a trauma surgeon at Auckland City Hospital and co-director of the National Trauma Network – Winners of the 2021 Best Plain English Annual Report Award\, the National Trauma Network used its annual report to communicate data\, science and medicine in a meaningful way. Through a mix of striking visual elements and people’s stories the Annual Report presents information on the patterns of injury in New Zealand. \nProfessor Ian Civil is Professor of Surgery with the University of Auckland and practices as a vascular surgeon at Auckland City Hospital where he is the Director of Trauma Services. He has an extensive career in documentary making\, writing\, stage and screen directing\, as well as being a celebrated comedian and satirist.
