SUMMARY:How to get positive news media coverage for your clients in today’s world - A masterclass with Pete Burdon
DESCRIPTION:18th August 2022 9:30am – 12:00pm via Zoom\n \nThank you for your interest in this masterclass. Registrations are now closed. If you are interested in joining us on the next one please email lauren@prinz.org.nz to be added to the interest list. If you are not currently on the mailing list\, and you'd like to be please email office@prinz.org.nz\nOverview\nSince the advent of Social Media\, it’s become harder for businesses to stand out as leaders in their niche. This is because everyone has their own online platform and it’s hard for clients to distinguish them all from one another. This is where coverage in traditional media and the ability to share that though multiple channels has become so powerful. The third-party endorsement it offers allows those who use it to stand out from the rest. \nAttracting this coverage for clients used to be a major focus of PR Practitioners\, but this has been dwindling over recent years as more and more communication platforms have appeared. While these are all effective\, they don’t come with the credibility and expert status that appearances in traditional media do. \nThis interactive course outlines the steps that PR Practitioners need to take in today’s world to get their clients into traditional media\, whether that be a national television news programme\, a niche magazine or an online news website. It will include short written exercises\, a brainstorming session and the use of examples to highlight points. \nLearning outcomes\nUnderstand what media to target and where to find them \nUnderstand exactly what reporters and presenters want (and how this has changed) \nUnderstand how to communicate with media (and how this has and hasn’t changed) \nUnderstand how to avoid aggravating reporters \nUnderstand advanced tactics to maximise coverage \nWho should attend?\nJunior level communicators \nMid and senior level communicators who want to refresh their skills or see how the role of publicist has changed \nPete Burdon (Founder and Head Trainer\, Media Training NZ)\n  \nAs a former daily newspaper reporter and government press secretary\, Pete has worked on both sides of the media. \nThis has given him a good understanding of how to work with the media in a way that benefits both parties. As well as helping clients master the media interview and media publicity processes over the last 20 years\, Pete is regularly in different forms of media himself. \nHe is also the author of Media Training for Modern Leaders. \nPete has two Masters Degrees (Journalism & Communication Management)\, lives in Christchurch and works across New Zealand and latterly Australia.

Tickets to last year’s event sold out – don’t miss this one! \nThanks to Katherine Barry and the Waikato-Tainui comms team for making this event happen.  \nReflect – Donna-Lee Biddle \nDonna-Lee is from Ngāti Pikiao\, Te Whakatōhea\, Ngāti Apakura and Maniapoto. She was raised in Murupara\, a small forestry town in the Bay of Plenty\, and spent her childhood riding horses “borrowed” from the back of the marae\, and swimming in the awa. She has four children and lives in Kirikiriroa with her husband. \nCurrently an investigator at Te Kāhui Tātari Ture – Criminal Cases Review Commission\, an independent Crown entity\, Donna-Lee was previously a journalist for Stuff\, covering large breaking news events such as the Whakaari eruption\, and was involved in and led many long-form investigations. She has won several Voyager Media awards for her work\, particularly in the feature writing and crime and justice sections. \nDonna-Lee is now a part-time columnist with Stuff\, and also studying a Master of Arts at Wintec\, due to be completed in August 2022. Her dissertation will analyse the representation of Maaori in the media and inform a cultural guideline for journalists and editors\, which she hopes will be utilised in newsrooms across the country. \nOn the panel\, Donna-Lee will be speaking about her current role as an investigator and her organisation’s approach to tikanga\, te reo\, and Te Tiriti\, as well as highlighting a few projects she worked on when she was a journalist. She will also speak briefly about her master’s project – why she chose to study that particular topic and what she hopes to achieve by publishing a cultural guideline. \n \nCelebrate – Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke   \nHana-Rāwhiti Maipi-Clarke (Waikato\, Ngā Puhi\, Ngāti Porou\, Te Atiawa\, Ngāi Tahu) knows the positive influence that maatauranga Maaori and maramataka Maaori can bring to the way we live. \nIn 2020\, Hana launched her book Maahina\, created to encourage rangatahi to better understand the environment and how it can help us physically\, mentally and emotionally. She is a passionate advocate for rangatahi mental health and education through maramataka\, and recently featured in an article on The Spinoff about her work using the maramataka and Matariki to help whaanau grow kai on their whenua. \nHana will provide an introduction to the influence of maramataka Maaori on people’s behaviours and attitudes\, and how it can guide the way we engage and communicate with people. \n \nInspire – Maioha Panapa \nMaioha Panapa is of Waikato-Maniapoto\, Ngai Taamanuhiri\, Rongowhakaata and Te Whaanau a Apanui descent. She was raised in the small south-eastern village of Te Muriwai\, 20km outside of Gisborne. \nMaioha spent the majority of her life on the East Coast\, until her family moved to Hamilton in 2012 to begin her secondary school years in a city with more opportunities. After graduating high school at Tai Waananga ki Ruakura\, Maioha began her Bachelor of Arts in Maaori Indigenous Studies and Anthropology at the University of Waikato. \nThe university became a place of endless challenges and possibilities\, a place where Maioha gained new skills that shaped the voice she wished to implement in matters that target tauira and rangatahi Maaori alike. \nGraduating in 2020\, Maioha went to work at Waikato-Tainui in the comms and engagement team\, taking up opportunities that included creating a national\, rangatahi-led COVID-19 social media campaign\, Ngaati Rangatahi. Led by rangatahi\, for rangatahi\, the campaign included creating content that relates to our youth\, whilst also sharing the right information from the right sources. What’s good for rangatahi is good for Aotearoa because that’s you\, that’s me\, that’s us. Pro-Whakapapa\, Pro-Whaanau\, Pro-Rangatahi!

SUMMARY:Online Panel Session – Tips on using and championing plain language
DESCRIPTION:4 July 2022 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm\n \n\n \nOverview\nWriting well takes skill\, time and effort. Cutting through the jargon to explain complex issues in a concise readable way that connects with your audience is challenging. \nPlain language enables people to participate in government\, commercial\, legal\, and leisure activities more effectively because they can understand the information presented to them. Plain language also has proven benefits for organisations that use it in their communications — including significant cost savings and better engagement with customers. \nTo pick up some tips on creating plain language documents\, working collaboratively with your audience on delivering for them and how to champion the value of plain language in your organisation join us for this lunchtime webinar. \nWhether it’s writing for the web\, social\, an annual report or responding to questions from the public we have a great panel lined up to offer their insights. We’ll also cover the Plain Language Awards 2022 with nominations closing at the end of July – so if you’re inspired there’s still time to enter! \nAbout the panellists:\n  \nLynda Harris\, Founder and Chief Executive of Write – Lynda is a communications specialist who believes that plain language makes the world a better place. It’s essential to the smooth and successful operation of any organisation. Poor writing wastes time and money\, but it also risks losing the trust of customers. Under Lynda’s leadership\, Write has become the largest plain language consultancy in the world. \n \n \nSacha Green\, National Advisor – Legal & Strategic and Violet Chong\, National Information Coordinator at the Citizen’s Advice Bureau – Citizens Advice Bureau were the overall winners of the 2021 Plain English Awards\, commended for their ability to translate complex issues and ‘legal-speak’ into language that is simple and to-the-point. The judges were particularly impressed with how they did this over multiple channels.  \nSacha sees plain language as a tool for empowerment. She has a long-term commitment to access to justice issues and is passionate about using plain language to help people understand their rights and responsibilities. Sacha also leads CAB’s Campaign for Inclusion in a Digital Age\, which highlights the need for information and services to be delivered across multiple channels.  \nViolet is the main person who looks after the content on the CAB website and has a knack for saying things plainly. Violet constantly reviews and updates the website to ensure the information is clear\, relevant\, and accurate. This includes managing over 2\,500 plain language questions and answers about people’s rights. \n  \nSuzie Tingley\, Manager Digital Deliver at Te Hiringa Hauora | Health Promotion Agency – As the Lead Digital Communications Advisor Suzie was a key member of the Ministry of Social Development Digital Communications Team which won the Best Plain English Website — Public Sector 2021. This balances with upholding New Zealander’s right to freedom of expression and recognising the diverse views of all Kiwis. \nLast year the Classification Office published a survey that found that almost every New Zealander is affected by misinformation. Read it here. \n \nKatie Kenny is Chief Reporter for The Whole Truth: Te Māramatanga and its predecessor\, The Whole Truth: Covid-19 Vaccination. The campaigns aim to provide New Zealanders with clear and accurate information — through videos\, graphics\, and words — about the pandemic and public health generally. \n \nCharlie Sklenar spent her early career in UK Defence. During that time she became the operations manager working on developing new capability in strategic communications. Charlie moved to Aotearoa in 2019 before joining the Unite Against Covid communications and engagement team right at the start of the pandemic. She played a key role in the establishment of the Managed Isolation and Quarantine system. As part of the COVID-19 Group in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet\, Charlie has been focussed on ensuring New Zealanders have access to credible information about COVID-19.

Our audiences behaviours are constantly changing. They’re online\, savvy and fully in control of where and who they get their news and information from. Media is now just one channel in the mix. \nAs a PR practitioner\, we need to continually evolve our PR and content strategies to meet the needs of our audiences\, both online and offline\, in order to be found where and when they are searching for us. \nThis Digital PR content strategy workshop will help you understand how PR now fits into the wider online universe and how to design a highly effective content strategy that when executed\, achieves real measurable results. \nThis workshop will cover: \n– Why PR has changed and how to adapt to new audience behaviours with digital \n– How to visualise and plan a Digital PR content strategy\, end-to-end \n– New tools to help you understand what your audience wants and what content to create for them \n– How to gear your content so it turns up in the right places online – not just by accident \n– New measurement metrics to truely prove your content is a success \nIf you’re keen to be a Digital PR trail-blazer in the industry\, then this course is for you! \nPresenter\nCharlene White\, Digital PR course facilitator \nThe course is run by Auckland-based Digital PR expert\, Charlene White\, who coaches PR agencies\, in-house Comms teams and individuals on how to expand their PR skills beyond traditional media and PR techniques. \nHaving worked in high profile Corporate Comms roles in New Zealand\, the UK and the Middle East\, Charlene saw the impact the Digital Age was having on the Communications industry a few years ago – but found a lack of clarity and resources available to help PR pros learn and adapt to the new digital world. \nAs a result\, she spent several years studying Digital PR from some of the best in the business. She has since developed a comprehensive yet\, easy-to-follow\, Digital PR process of her own which smashes traditional PR techniques together with new digital tools\, data\, SEO and measurement metrics to capture audiences in both digital ‘Browse’ and ‘Search’ mode. \nHaving seen the success her process was creating for her consulting clients\, she launched DigiPR in 2019 to help PR pros lift their digital game. \nSince then\, she has coached hundreds of corporate teams\, agencies and individuals on how to expand their digital skills and client offerings and to show the true value and impact of their work…beyond column inches and sentiment. \nAs well as being a trainer for PRINZ\, she is also a coach for the Public Relations Institute of Australia (PRIA) and a mentor for Auckland University of Technology’s (AUT) Communications’ faculty. \n \nThis course content aligns with the communication capabilities section of the Global Capability Framework with particular emphasis on this summary: \nCommunication Capabilities \n\nTo align communication strategies with organisational purpose and values\nTo identify and address communication problems proactively\nTo conduct formative and evaluative research to underpin communication strategies and tactics\nTo communicate effectively across a full range of platforms and technologies.\n\n\nThis course has a minimum number requirement\, so please book early to ensure the course is not cancelled. \nThe ticket prices are GST inclusive.
