SUMMARY:Communicating in the age of misinformation
DESCRIPTION:4th April 2022 1pm VIA ZOOM\n\nThe Public Relations Institute’s Central Committee and the PRINZ office are proud to present Communicating in the age of misinformation – MC’d by Central PRINZ Committee Chair\, Morwenna Grills.\n\nOverview\nCombatting the spread of misinformation is one of the biggest challenges facing us as professional communicators today. \nThe recent protest at Parliament that ended in violence showed the real and dangerous impact of misinformation. \nAs professional communicators we are compelled to respond to misinformation. Join our panel of experts to discuss key questions on this topic – what is misinformation? How do you get the facts in front of people who don’t want to engage with you? How can we support journalists and the media to keep being a source of truth? \nTo discuss the challenges of dealing with misinformation join Chief Censor David Shanks\, Charlie Sklenar from the Unite Against Covid communications team and Stuff journalist Katie Kenny in this lunchtime session.\, \nYour panellists are…\nDavid Shanks is New Zealand’s Chief Censor and leads Te Mana Whakaatu – Classification Office\, an Independent Crown Entity. He’s responsible for protecting New Zealanders from harm\, especially harm to tamariki and rangatahi that can come from sex\, crime\, cruelty\, horror and violence in media. This balances with upholding New Zealander’s right to freedom of expression and recognising the diverse views of all Kiwis. \nLast year the Classification Office published a survey that found that almost every New Zealander is affected by misinformation. Read it here. \n \nKatie Kenny is Chief Reporter for The Whole Truth: Te Māramatanga and its predecessor\, The Whole Truth: Covid-19 Vaccination. The campaigns aim to provide New Zealanders with clear and accurate information — through videos\, graphics\, and words — about the pandemic and public health generally. \n \nCharlie Sklenar spent her early career in UK Defence. During that time she became the operations manager working on developing new capability in strategic communications. Charlie moved to Aotearoa in 2019 before joining the Unite Against Covid communications and engagement team right at the start of the pandemic. She played a key role in the establishment of the Managed Isolation and Quarantine system. As part of the COVID-19 Group in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet\, Charlie has been focussed on ensuring New Zealanders have access to credible information about COVID-19.

SUMMARY:Global Alliance Webinar - Trust in media during the Covid-19 pandemic: Implications for communication professionals
DESCRIPTION:1 February 2022 @ 9:00 pm – 10:00 pm NZST\n\nOverview\nWe’ve all heard claims of fake news and reports of declining media trust. Interestingly\, public trust in mainstream news media during the Covid-19 pandemic period has been declining in some countries (eg the USA) and yet increasing in others (eg in the Nordics). What are the implications of these varying levels of media trust for communication professionals in governments\, corporations\, NGOs\, and so on across the globe? For example\, does low media trust shape the choices we make about which channels will be most effective for pandemic-related messages? And what has media trust to do with ethics in public relations? \nDrs. Chiara Valentini and Mark Badham will present current research on media trust and ethics\, especially in relation to the current pandemic and with a Nordic perspective. They will also lead a discussion on implications for communication professionals globally. \nSign up here. \nPresenters\nChiara Valentini\, Professor of Corporate Communication at Jyväskylä University School of Business & Economics (Finland)\, is the author of numerous peer-reviewed publications and books in strategic public relations\, government communication\, and crisis communication in the digital environment. Dr. Valentini serves as reviewer and editorial board member of several international journals and is active with several professional organizations. She leads an international team of researchers investigating issues pertaining to Covid-19-related communications by social actors\, such as governments\, news media\, health authorities\, experts\, business organizations\, and their impact on the general public’s attitudes and behaviours. See https://covid19commresearch.com. \n \nMark Badham is Senior Lecturer in Corporate Communication\, Jyväskylä University School of Business & Economics\, Finland. His research is focused on news media roles in mass communication processes\, digital crisis communication\, social media engagement\, relationship management\, and organizational legitimacy. He has worked in professional corporate communication roles for corporations\, politicians\, political parties\, governments and NGOs in Australia.

Consulting with the right people\, in the right way\, is never more important than when working with Māori and iwi groups. \nThere are innumerable rights and wrongs\, some of them subtle\, all of them important: Do I hongi? Who do I talk to? What do Māori organisations look for when doing business? How do Māori groups approach communications? \nScott Campbell\, Chief Executive of Campbell Squared\, has extensive experience working both with and for iwi organisations and Māori businesses\, and will be leading our Iwi Engagement Course. \nScott has whakapapa to Ngāti Whakaue\, Ngāti Rangiwewehi\, Ngāti Tūwharetoa\, Ngāi te Rangi\, Ngāti Pūkenga\, from the Bay of Plenty region. His consultancy provides ongoing and project-based support to a range of iwi and hapū entities\, both pre- and post-Treaty settlement\, and advises corporate and government agencies on their engagement with tangata whenua. \nScott will show you that there is much more to working with Māori than just knowing the protocols. He will help you to grow your understanding of what is required to build and maintain strong relationships with iwi\, hapū and whānau. \nThis course will help PR practitioners to develop an understanding of the opportunities that can come from working with tangata whenua\, and how to build trust and engage proactively to encourage mutually beneficial and long-lasting connections. Practical workshops will be included to develop your skills and learning. \nWhat we will cover:\n\nA glimpse into te ao Māori – what drives Māori? Values vs value\, what you need to know.\nUnderstanding the Treaty settlement process\, and how this impacts on other stakeholders.\nApplication of the Treaty in business as usual.\nPreparing for iwi engagement – what you need to think about.\nIwi engagement best practice – using practical scenarios.\nBasic tikanga (customs and protocols).\n\nThis course is for people who:\n\nNeed to seek advice\, feedback\, or involvement with Māori or iwi groups.\nWant to establish\, enhance\, or maintain their relationships with Māori and iwi groups.\nRequire tools to build confidence in working with Māori and iwi.\n\nPresenter\nScott Campbell \nScott is Campbell Squared’s CE.
