The link between culture and our work as communicators is inseparable.
In our roles, we are responsible for building and maintaining organisational relationships. This can’t be done in an authentic manner without first understanding the values, beliefs, motivations, and communication needs of our increasingly diverse publics.
How do we do this without making stereotypical assumptions based on our own worldviews, which risk the relationships and reputations of the organisations we represent?
Having intercultural competency is a much-needed skill that enables us to be better equipped at communicating more mindfully in our diverse public relations contexts.
The course will include concepts and models, case studies and workshops. Come prepared to share and participate!
- Key concepts of culture and diversity
- Perspectives on cultural dimensions and communication styles
- Understanding stereotyping and appropriation
- Learning to be more mindful and reflexive
- Reflecting on our communication practices and outputs
- Practical toolkit for more mindful interactions and appropriate communication outputs
Workshop attendees will be:
- More aware of the cultural context of communication
- Able to critically assess their own intercultural communication practice
- Confident about communicating more appropriately in culturally diverse contexts
Deepti Bhargava, Lecturer, Public Relations, Auckland University of Technology
Deepti Bhargava is a public relations lecturer at AUT University, teaching across various papers including the student-led PR agency – Outside the Square. In this paper, students work with real-life clients and she and her colleagues guide them to use planning, evaluation and reflection as critical tools of PR success.
She is passionate about the impact good public relations practice can have on organisations and communities and hopes to inspire the same in those she works with.
She is an Accredited Member of PRINZ and is currently project managing the World Public Relations Forum to be hosted in Auckland in 2020. Prior to joining AUT, Deepti worked in corporate communications at Unitec Institute of Technology. Her role included the governance, planning, implementation and monitoring of online communications. In her prior life overseas, she has also worked across advertising and feature writing.
Deepti is currently pursuing a Ph.D. research on the occupational culture of New Zealand’s public relations consultancies.
