Overview

Not many of us get the opportunity to work on brands from inception to launch, nevermind breaking crowdfunding records along the way with a controversial product.

And have April Fool’s pranks gone too far?

Catch up with your colleagues over lunch and hear about two campaigns that broke the mold.

Positioning medical cannabis as Marlborough’s next Sauvignon Blanc

A new medical cannabis start up and a conversation that started a journey. In 2019 Great Scott worked alongside a small group of committed South Islanders to create a name, brand and website and then launch the company. Nearly 12 months later Puro New Zealand went onto break the Australasian crowdfunding record, raising $4million in just four weeks. How did they do it? Come and find out!

(Great Scott won Silver in the Corporate Public Relations category in the 2020 PRINZ Awards).

Kathmandu’s All-Weather Wedding Dress

It started as a gag, but Kathmandu’s world first all-weather wedding dress went from April Fool’s prank to hot auction item overnight. In a saturated media environment, the campaign cut though the noise with a disruptive idea. Was it all worth it? Come and find out!

(Kathmandu won Silver in the Marketing Communication – Public Relations category in the 2020 PRINZ Awards).

Presenters

Donovan Ryan, Co-director, Great Scott

After spending too long at university Donovan worked in and around Parliament for the first part of his career. A move back home to Christchurch saw him continue in communications – championing trades training and working for Canterbury District Health Board.Donovan joined forces with Jo Scott in 2016 to set up Great Scott – an award-winning communications agency.

Tim Aldridge, Managing Director, Puro

With a string of successful businesses behind him, Tim is an expert at setting up and growing new entities. Tim worked in business consultancy before setting up Party Warehouse in 2001, which he grew to become the South Island’s largest marquee and event company. His next success, HireKING, was named as one the top 50 fastest growing companies in New Zealand in 2017. Tim has also helped establish some of the South Island’s leading events, including the Great Kiwi Beer Festival, the South Island Wine & Food Festival and Electric Avenue.

Paula Charmley, PR and Media Specialist, Kathmandu

With a passion for outdoor adventures and travel, Paula’s career began as an outdoor instructor in Aotearoa, Australia, and Italy. After abseiling young people off city walls in Assisi and participating in volunteer projects in India and Thailand, she returned home to study marketing and tourism at Lincoln University. She has worked in Auckland for Tourism New Zealand and now equips others for their own adventures at Kathmandu.
